What is it about?

The purpose of this study was to enhance physical and mechanical abilities of clay- based mortars using nanoadditives. To achieve the mechanical and physical reinforcement two different compositions were fabricated by the use of nanoclay, nanosilica and nanoalumina.

Why is it important?

As a part of the vernacular architecture, earth construction represents local customs and as such is based mostly on empirical methods and techniques. Yet, at present days where societies become more and more environmentally conscious, the need to turn to sustainable materials grows rapidly. The benefits of the use of earth in construction are highlighted by numerous researchers and include the low embodied energy and CO2 emissions, high thermal mass and healthy non-toxic dwellings. Furthermore, the inexpensive and simple method of construction, the utilization of the indigenous resources and the ability to reuse are enhancing the financial and social benefits of earthen materials.

Perspectives

I hope this research will turn the attention towards earthen structures in modern construction.
