What is it about?

In this paper, processes of forming the samples of powder materials based on the titanium – nickel and nickel – aluminium systems were investigated. The possibility of conducting self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in the nickel – aluminium system without protective atmosphere is shown. It is important to consider the kinetics of the process. The initial heating temperature of the starting mixture is the main factor determining the flow of this process. Its growth leads to an increase of the synthesis speed. Thus, it is possible to obtain products by SHS method in the simpler technological conditions. Experiments for the Ni-Ti system were carried out on the combined process of metallothermy and SHS method. The experiments are confirmed by thermodynamic calculations. The results of the experiments have practical and scientific interest.

Why is it important?

Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is a kind of combustion process in which new solids (intermetallides) are formed. They have properties that are significantly different from the properties of the original substances. Such substances either cannot be obtained by traditional technologies or require in some cases high energy costs.

Perspectives

Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is a modern technology that is constantly evolving and improving. Conducting experiments in this area of knowledge and technologies is relevant and important. It is also interesting to exchange information with other authors.
