What is it about?
The influence of weld joint heterogeneity on crack resistance in lean steel probes was numerically modeled. The FEA for strain-stress state by free distributed FeniCs and own simulation program of stochastic crack growth were used. The calculation based on mechanial properties defined by mechanical test and microhardness distribution near the weld and heat-affected zone and by optical flaw detection.

Why is it important?
The heterogeneiy of mechanical properties has small influence on stress and strain distribution but defects grows greatly decrease the probability of failure due to high crack growth rate. The effect will increase in case of extreme environment such as low temperature or corrosive medium.
Perspectives
It is neccesary to estimate numerically how the extreme environment could influence on crack resistance of structure members in case of ductile-brittle transition or inappropriate quality of welding technology or acid rain for example.
