What is it about?

The Article shows results of studies of a series of dry construction mixtures, being the most popular on the local market for repair of concrete and reinforced concrete structures, in order to improve their performance by modifying composition of their components. The studies included X-ray phase analysis and research of technological and operational properties of the mixtures. The work proved a possibility to replace the imported aluminous cement in dry repair mixtures with a Russian equivalent bringing along a simultaneous product cost reduction. The studies selected a required aluminous cement-to-Portland cement proportion in repair mortar to ensure optimal setting time and strength characteristics consistent with the initial recipes in case of replacement.

Why is it important?

1. Studies of technological and operational properties of repair mortar composition for concrete – dry construction mixture Starmex RM3 – show that it fully meets the specifications and standards in force. 2. As compared to characteristics of Maxrite 500 and Maxrest mixture compositions the Starmex MR3 is of higher pot life, which makes it more convenient at repair works. In addition to that, one of its components - polypropylene fibre – reduces shrinkage enhancing resistance to cracking of the hardened mortar. 3. Research of effect of adding aluminous cement Fondu and GTs60 to Portland cement TsEM I 42.5 N shows that the most optimal setting time is achieved at adding 15% of Fondu or 35% of GTs60. 4. Early strength of mortars at the age of 3 days upon addition of GTs60 proved to be a bit less than the strength after adding Fondu. 5. The research results bring to a conclusion that replacement of aluminous cement Fondu in dry mixture Starmex RM3 with GTs60 is possible, if GTs60-to-Portland cement proportion is changed from 15/85 to 35/65. With the latter proportion of cements the construction mixture will ensure optimal setting time and strength characteristics consistent with the initial recipe. 6. Change from French Fondu to Russian cement grade GTs60 in the composition of dry construction mixture for repair of concrete will enable to reduce product costs without a significant quality loss, which is in full compliance with the government’s import replacement policy for construction materials industry in 2015-2020. Cost of aluminous cement Fondu reaches 49 thousand roubles per tonne, which is twice as much as the cost of cement GTs60.

Perspectives

In the recent years, Russian building industry actively uses aluminate cement-based dry construction mixtures instead of conventional sand-cement mortars. Their use significantly reduces duration of construction works, improves production technology, reduces labour cost, enhances stability of physical and mechanical characteristics of items and structures, and reduces transportation and logistics costs. In general, development of binding material production industry in combination with rich natural resources of mineral raw materials is a powerful base for development of new range of Russia-made dry construction mixtures to offer for repair of various types of concrete. Today, this industry can be considered one of the most promising and economically attractive within the building complex as a whole. In 2013, Round Table ‘Aluminate Dry Construction Mixtures. Alternative to Aluminate Cements in Dry Construction Mixtures’ was organised by Academician V.P. Kuzmina involving participation of famous Russian scientists and producers concerned. Its results highlighted that use of new materials in replace of recipe-specified aluminous cement in mixtures is of high strategic value for increase in volumes of Russia-made repair mixtures and enhancement of cost reduction. Abroad, both in Europe and Asia, issues related to aluminous cement-based dry construction mixture production and use were also a subject matter of a series of scientific studies.
