What is it about?

Results from processing aluminum-MMCs by the process steps powder - sintering - thixoforging.

Why is it important?

The near-net-shape process allows to efficiently manufacture MMC's with up to 70% of ceramic reinforcements in three simple steps, already commercially available. Heavy machining can be avoided.

Perspectives

A wider use of MMC's has always been inhibited by the high cost for processing, final machining and/or quality issues. This new combination of process steps promises to avoid many of these obstacles. Especially thixoforging with its consolidation of the component under pressure and to a near net shape can help to make MMC's an option even for mass production
