What is it about?

This manuscript demonstrates a novel method for grading two different qualities of agarwood oil using gel electrophoresis. The grading was conducted by breaking up the agarwood oil into its individual components corresponding to specific molecular weight and zeta potential value. Under these conditions, the agarwood oil needs to be emulsified with an optimized surfactant concentration. The component will be separated from each other and exist as single droplets with their unique individual electrophoretic mobility. The finding is expected to provide a non-destructive in­situ qualitative based on the agarwood oil quality.

Why is it important?

The research output is beneficial to the essential oil industry as the technique can be further explored for assessing the quality of essential oil. To conclude, this work is an engineering practice of applying the emulsification mechanism to evaluate the quality of agarwood oil by using gel electrophoresis technique and principles. This work can also be distinguished from other research by its ability to solve the essential oil quality determination problem and implement solutions in cost-effective and practical ways.

Perspectives

We believe that our technique can be more widely applied in other oils and provides new insight into how electrophoresis can be applied to differentiate oil quality based on its electrical properties. The development of the chemical and formulation process and optimizing the process can provide a new perception on the potential of applying electrophoresis in colloid and interface science.
