What is it about?

Numerical tool able to simulate the fire initiation and evolution in motorway and railway tunnels, and the interactions between fire and the structure. Fire modelling is realised by using FDS (Fire dynamics Simulator), while concrete vault is treated according to a Multiphase Porous Media approach.

Why is it important?

At the moment there are not so sophisticated models for describing the fire scenario (from initiation to its evolution) in tunnels and the corresponding response of the structure. The coupling strategy is particularly efficient and the models used for the calculation of the fluid and the solid domains, are the top of the state of the art.

Perspectives

We have been working on this topic for many years and at the top level reached is very interesting not only for the academic world but also for the industry. So, we hope to create large interest not only from scientific point of view, but also in in civil and industrial engineering and for real scale applications.
