What is it about?
APF gels are commonly used for prevention of dental caries. Due to their acidic pH they may increase surface roughness of dental tissues and composite restoratives. Increased surface roughness may lead to accumulation of microbial plaque and staining of composites and inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the changes in surface roughness of various dental nano-composite restorative materials induced by APF application.

Why is it important?
The importance of the study was to evaluate how much the composite surfaces are influenced by the acidic activity of this fluoridate agent and to estimate if these changes are clinically significant. The management of the composite restorations is depended on the results of the study.
Perspectives
According to the results of the study the patients should be informed about the side effect that may be occurred on surface of their composite restorations during fluoridation treatment with APF gels and may be needed to be polished due to increased surface roughness, especially those containing larger inorganic fillers.
