What is it about?

Chatter is a harmful phenomenon in machining and it adversely affects surface quality and tool life. Damping using online heating, magnetic and other forms of damping may lead to reduction or even elimination of chatter.

Why is it important?

Understanding the right cause of chatter formation is important to find appropriate solution to chatter problems. The fact that chatter is a resonance phenomenon has led to the discovery of several methods of chatter control through increasing the damping coefficient of the system.

Perspectives

Machinability enhancement through chatter control and the use of advanced tools and techniques such as diamond tools in machining titanium alloys has resulted in many fold incrase in tool life and surface finish.
