What is it about?

Rice hull or rice husk is the covering of rice seeds and a by-product of milling rice grain. This paper presented that amorphous or crystalline form of silica can be extracted from the waste rice hull. The crystalline silica form can be obtained by open-field burning which was usually done by millers in the Philippines. Likewise, the amorphous form can be obtained by controlled burning.

Why is it important?

In the Philippines, this rice hull was usually burned in an open-field which produces a crystalline silica ash which is known as dangerous to respiratory system when inhaled while amorphous silica can be obtained by controlled burning. Silica is a very important material and sources are mostly mined. This information therefore may address the proper treatment to waste like rice hull wherein options were presented to produce two forms of silica for value-adding application.

Perspectives

This publication may inform the readers about the characteristics of silica that can be extracted from the considered waste rice hull specifically in the Philippines. Silica is a very important material and is usually mined. This paper initially presents a renewable source of silica in two different forms from Philippine waste rice hull. This can be a basis for developing desired form of silica material for specific value-adding application.
