What is it about?
A thin-shell silk cocoon (TSC), a residual from the silk industry, was used as an alternative nitrogen (N-) source to promote acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824. TSC can help increase cell growth and phase shift of acetone, whereas yeast extract can promote phase shift of biobutanol.

Why is it important?
The ABE fermentation by C. acetobutylicum ATCC 824 can be improved by using the mixture of TSC and yeast extract as nitrogen sources.
