What is it about?

When the surface of a steel part is required to be hard, the carburizing is often applied. The carburizing process is based on the carbon atoms adsorbtion on the metal surface at high temperature (above 800 degrees Celsius). Then these carbon atoms are run towards the core of the metal part according to the diffusion law. Usually the diffusion law is presented in the form of the differential equation. We propose the simplified algorithm to solve the differential equation of diffusion. This algorithm can be implemented using standard MS Excel or OpenOfficeCalc software. No complicated special software packages are needed.

Why is it important?

The proposed method can help scientists or technologists to estimate the parameters of the carburizing process (time, temperature, carbon content and its activity in the atmosphere) to obtain the required properties of the steel parts.

Perspectives

Further investigations will be carried out to correlate the mathematical model parameters with the chemical composition of the carburized steel grades.
