What is it about?

The deep drawing is one of the sheets metal forming processes, which transform a thin sheet in one drawn part more or less hollow. In this forming process, the sheet metal is named blank disposed between the die and the blank holder by the application of blank holder force BHF. The blank is radially drawn into the forming die by the progressive mechanical action of a punch, In order to obtain the desired product geometry. The success of the deep drawing operation requires the well define adjustment of the process parameters and an adequate choice of the material mechanical behavior.

Why is it important?

The object of this study is to highlight one the most encountered problems in the sheet metal forming. Cases of rupture on the mild steel sheet were recorded in a deep drawing workshop, during the forming operation of the wheelbarrows. A characterization of the material is proposed and 3D simulation of the forming operation was performed on the finite element code Abaqus/CAE Explicit. The objective is to highlight the influence of the different deep drawing parameters on the sheet behavior to the plastic strain during the deformation, especially the holding force, the die radius, the coefficient of friction between the contact surfaces and the punch velocity.

Perspectives

The present study aims to evaluate the plastic deformations which undergoing the sheet at the end of the deep drawing operation. An application of the univariate experimental method allows us to classify hierarchically the chosen parameters by their influence degree on the material behavior to the plastic strain.
