What is it about?
This work is about the determination of stress intensity factors for a cracked panel by means of DIC (digital image correlation). A conventional integrally stiffened panel and an integrally stiffened panel with crenellations are compared.

Why is it important?
This work is important because it shows (i) the advantages of crenellations as crack retarders and (ii) the advantages of using digital image correlation for determination of stress intensity factors.
Perspectives
Some new solutions to add safety to aircraft structures and new means to estimate stress intensity factors are presented. It is expected that the presentation of such subjects be helpful as ways to improve applied fracture mechanics in the future.
