What is it about?
River floodplains are dynamic landscapes that respond to natural flood cycles and human modifications. This study uses remote sensing data to conduct a temporal analysis of the upper Paraná River floodplain near Porto Rico, Paraná state, documenting how this landscape has changed over time. We examine shifts in the distribution of floodplain habitats, water bodies, and vegetation, identifying the drivers of change and their implications for the ecological functions of this important wetland ecosystem.

Why is it important?
Remote sensing-based temporal analyses of floodplain dynamics are essential for monitoring how these complex ecosystems respond to dam construction, changes in river flow, and climate variability. This study contributes a detailed reconstruction of change in one of South America's most ecologically significant floodplains, providing a framework for future monitoring and management of the upper Paraná floodplain system.
Perspectives
The upper Paraná floodplain near Porto Rico has been a key field site throughout my career, and tracking its changes through satellite imagery reveals both the power of remote sensing and the scale of environmental transformation in this region. I hope this temporal analysis adds to the evidence base for conserving and restoring what remains of this extraordinary ecosystem.
