What is it about?

The Atlantic Forest is one of the world's most fragmented and threatened tropical forests. To understand and manage what remains, scientists use landscape metrics — mathematical measures of how forest patches are sized, shaped, and distributed across the landscape. This study applies spatial dimension landscape metrics to analyze the configuration of Atlantic Forest remnants in Paraná state, providing a detailed quantitative picture of the forest's current state. The results reveal the extent of fragmentation and inform strategies for conservation and restoration.

Why is it important?

Landscape metrics provide objective, spatially explicit tools for assessing forest fragmentation. This study contributes a rigorous spatial analysis of Atlantic Forest remnants in Paraná, generating baseline data for monitoring future change and evaluating conservation policies. The methodology supports prioritization of restoration and protection efforts in the Atlantic Forest biome.

Perspectives

Landscape metrics tell a powerful story about what has been lost and what remains. Working on the spatial configuration of Atlantic Forest remnants reinforced my belief that science must be coupled with urgency in conservation. I hope this work contributes to the case for more ambitious restoration targets in the Atlantic Forest of Paraná.
