" In contrast to our assumption that ISIS or Taliban were the most lethal global terrorist groups, in reality, the Shining Path (Peru) was worst in terms of causing death, followed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Taliban were certainly a lethal force in global terrorism (the third in the top 30) and overall the most destructive of all when considering fatalities and injuries. Overall, there were 3,062 terrorist groups active during 1970-2013 (including ‘lone wolf individuals’ without an affiliation). The implications are that most of the terrorist groups originate from the Middle East or South America yet their actions are also felt around the world." (p. 19)
