" The two most important factors and de- pendent variable in the model were based on ‘personal attitude’, ‘social norm’ and behavioral intent from the Theory of Reasoned Action. During this study, two new factors were drawn from experimental studies in the disaster planning and consumer behavior literature. Personal attitude was a composite variable, composed of an attitude and a modifier. The attitude was the feeling towards the evacuation message, and the modifier was the severity of a recent near miss disaster (or it could be an actual injury). Near disaster experience severity (NDE) was developed to represent the intensity of recent positive or negative episodic memories. This composite factor had a predictive ability on behavioral intent to evacuate, which in turn predicted actual behavior." (p. 16)
