What is it about?

The long stream of work by Professor Ruby Roy Dholakia and associates at the University of Rhode Island (URI) evolved from telecom to convergence to e-commerce to m-commerce to new media... and continues to evolve. This is an insightful view from the URI team (Nir was in the doctoral program at URI at the time) of international differences in mobile connectivity and commerce.

Why is it important?

A paper like this show why it is important, in technologically turbulent times and settings, to step back and look at the unfolding phenomena through some clear conceptual frames. The insights uncovered here continue to be relevant.

Perspectives

The history of "IT, Markets and Consumers" work at the University of Rhode Island (URI), under the leadership of Ruby Roy Dholakia, from the mid-1980s to the second decade of the 21st century, has been remarkable. While mobile apps and mobile strategies are widely talked about now, the URI researchers uncovered the emerging patterns very early on. Dozens of doctoral students involved in such work at URI, such as Dr. Nir Kshetri, have now made marks of their own on the research world.
