Why is it important?
This chapter gives a brief overview of the different schools of thought relating to the fourth dimension in the Humanities and in the Arts. Addressing the issue of time as the fourth element, the author offers a possible alternative definition that may meet the needs of geometers and artists.
Perspectives
Scientists and philosophers have studied the concept of dimension since the beginning of time. Artists have always been challenged to convey visually what a four-dimensional object could look like considering the restrictive nature of our perceptual environment. Mathematics and in particular geometry may provide the elements on which to base a visual representation and bypass the controversy about Time as the 4th dimension.
