What is it about?

Phonetic analyses of student production of words that are pronounced differently in American English and British English (received pronunciation) indicated that students have highly variable pronunciations that are probably influenced by a number of factors. Watching large numbers of American series would appear to be a big influence.

Why is it important?

Origins of L2 accents would appear to be influenced not only by the L1, but also by imitation of speakers we are in contact with, both directly (as in teachers or friends) or indirectly, via online media. The influence of online media, especially through series and other informal learning sources, appears to be highly significant.

Perspectives

The co-authors on this paper are specialists in phonetics. Our collaboration has produced an important addition to research on informal learning in L2 acquisition, tackling pronunciation for the first time. It will be important in the future to draw more specific correlations between informal listening and accent production on an individual basis.
