What is it about?

This paper analyzes what may have been a mistake (or a mis-take) by pianist Thelonious Monk playing a jazz solo in 1958. The authors make a case that the idea of a mistake can be better explored from the perspective of learning.

Why is it important?

In education, mistakes are most often punished, but in music, mis-takes are opportunities to rethink the plans that are laid out. Often mis-takes lead to new insights, new ideas, and a fresh understanding of the world.

Perspectives

My role in this paper was limited to late in the process, helping to create some visualisations and going over the transcriptions and the paper, along with perhaps providing a few of the quotes and some hype. But I was honoured to work alongside such amazing minds. It's a good paper.
