What is it about?

GIHREX (or Integrated Natural Resources Management, Hydrology and Governance in the Inner Delta NigerRiver) is a multidisciplinary research project from IRD (ex-ORSTOM) within the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Research in Mali. GIHREX (1998-2000), coordinated by D. Orange, was dealing with the importance to integrate research, management and governance together from the beginning of the multi-actors discussions. We assumed that bringing together integrated modeling, web interface for data dissemination and one multi-stakeholders expert group will facilitate the governance of any large and complex ecosystem, mainly for the floodplain zones.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the combining of integrated modeling with a web-interface and a multi-stakeholders group can work over very short time periods - within a year, to bring peace and cooperation between stakeholders. Thus, social , economical and environmental strategies can be addressed together.

Perspectives

It was important to show that very innovative integrated modeling can be used directly by the villagers to discuss with them about Natural Resources Management. The perspective of GIHREX was to help and to accompany the government of Mali in the decentralization process with success.
