What is it about?
This essay reconstructs experiences of transnational, female political militancy between Italy and Australia, through the prism of four oral history testimonies: Cathy Angelone, Pierina Pirisi, Stefania Pieri and Cira La Gioia. These four women were all born in Italy and immigrated to Australia in different times and by different means between the 1950s and the 1970s. The reconstructed and studied fragments of migratory trajectories are part of the wider effort to piece together the historical memory of the Italian female emigration throughout the 20th Century in the various areas of Italian emigration.

Why is it important?
The originality of this paper lies in the multi-dimensional perspective of the testimonies. Such testimonies reveal not only stimulating individual migrant trajectories but also instances of collective political activity, which have so far been marginalised in the field of study of Italian female emigration to Australia. The testimonies of Cathy, Pierina, Stefania and Cira revolve around the common denominator of the Italian Left activism in Australia, especially through the local sections of the Italian Federation of Emigrant Workers and Families (FILEF) and the Italian Communist Party (PCI), and its commitment to migrant and migrant family rights.
