What is it about?

We use analytic consideration and numerical simulation to demonstrate the presence of distortion of the electromagnetic field, which is known as static shift, in marine electromagnetic measurements. Unlike the on-shore measurements, in the sea, this distortion affects magnetic as well as electric components of the field.

Why is it important?

It is shown that static shift is present in the frequency domain traditional horizontal-horizontal electromagnetic dipoles system of the marine data acquisition. A similar effect is observed in the time domain system base on the use of vertical source and receiver electrodes. It is interesting in such a system response of a limited size target may exceed that of an infinite layer of the same thickness and resistivity.
