What is it about?

I show, for the first time, equations that predict P-wave and S-wave impedances are linearly related with their respective velocities, and P-wave impedance is linearly related with the Vp/Vs ratio. The slope and intercept terms consist of geology dependent coefficients, and the equations are shown to discriminate competent carbonates from sandstones.

Why is it important?

The equations define inverted elastic properties in a new way that gives them geologic character and relevance. They also constrain some theoretical methods and approaches popularly used by practitioners of rock physics in quantitative seismic characterization.
