What is it about?

This text describes a methodology to monitor the evolution over time of abandoned bridges. For this, the use of digital elevation models of the intrados is proposed, together with the comparison of series of photographs.

Why is it important?

This method may detect a varied range of situations in a simple way; therefore, no prior knowledge regarding the active dynamics of the bridge is necessary and, thus, it is a valuable option for preliminary studies, where scarce information is available.

Perspectives

This study started in 2017 and was served to alert a critic situation of the bridge indicated in the text, the situation was worsening during the following years and ended with the collapse in 2021. This unfortunate sequence allows us to stress the importance of continuous monitoring and the fact that early warnings, if taken seriously by the administrators, could prevent subsequent loses.
