What is it about?

This article documents the history of an event called the "Running of the Gnomes". This event is a translation of the "Race for the Cure" events to benefit breast cancer research into an online game, World of Warcraft. Just as the Race for the Cure attracts attention by disrupting traffic patterns and engaging participants in fundraising, so does the Running of the Gnomes by disrupting game servers. The more people who attend the Running of the Gnomes, the more money is raised.

Why is it important?

This paper shows a case where an offline event is transformed into an online event with similar components but adopted uniquely to fit the online environment. This model shows how online fundraising events can be adapted to fit their community, and also shows how hacktivism can raise awareness and contributions to charity.

Perspectives

i am the sole author of this paper, but the event is a collaboration of many people. I was happy to write about the event as hacktivism, but I am happier to share the existence of this event with a broader audience.
