What is it about?

Hypertension is a major risk factor for developing heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Weight loss, regular exercise and consuming a healthy diet have been recommended to lower blood pressure. We have demonstrated that a diet that is rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, fish and dairy and low in meat, sweets and alcohol lowers blood pressure in adults.

Why is it important?

Previous research has mostly focused on the effect of single nutrients or single foods on blood pressure. However, we do not eat nutrients but we eat foods usually in different food combinations that form whole diets. Its therefore important to assess the effect of entire dietary patterns on blood pressure.

Perspectives

Carrying out this research enabled me to answer the question that I always asked in my clinical practice - which diet is good for lowering blood pressure? The results have confirmed that its not about single nutrients or single foods but its the combination of the different foods in form of diet patterns that matter.
