What is it about?

The ratio of nursing ADN and BSN programs that use one or more holistic admissions criteria to the total number of programs in each state and region of the US are compared.

Why is it important?

Holistic admissions review is recommended to increase diversity and inclusion in the health professions, but nursing lags behind other health professions in adoption.

Perspectives

Only 43% of US progrrams used one or more criteria that are considered to be consistent with holistic admissions review. Further, considering the mean for the number of holistic admissions criteria nationwide was <1.0, even those programs that use those criteria are unlikely to have a meaningful impact on admission of underrepresented students. A clearly defined admissions rubric with a balanced assessment of experience, attribute, and academic metric criteria is needed to ensure that admissions processes are conducted in the most equitable manner for successful integration of the nursing profession.
