What is it about?

Currently in Burkina Faso, there are poultry farmers who produce and use saprophagous fly larvae as a protein food source for their poultry. Saprophagous flies are flies that develop in organic waste (substrates). The usual practices of these farmers and the substrates of production have been identified. The fly species involved in the decomposition of the substrates were also listed.

Why is it important?

To produce maggots, you need substrates. This study guides researchers on the available substrates, the needs of the farmers and the possibility of improving production techniques for poultry farmers. This is part of a participatory research.

Perspectives

After this study, we can determine the most productive substrates for maggot rearing and safe substrates for poultry health. And also we can look for factors that can negatively influence larval production and find solutions.
