What is it about?
European Goldfinches are popular cage birds native to Europe that have been introduced to many countries throughout the world. This work describes a population introduced to North America circa 2000 that is now established in the United States in the western Great Lakes states of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Why is it important?
Escaped or introduced songbirds are largely ignored by active birdwatchers and "citizen scientists", making tracking their points of introduction, spread, distribution, and ecology difficult to monitor. We pull together thousands of records from multiple sources to reconstruct the history of this species in North America and in particular this now-established population. Further, we warn about the inconsistencies in citizen science protocols that have hindered these types of efforts and will continue to do so without modifications.
