What is it about?

The history of museum objects like taxidermied mammal mounts and bird skins is reliant on the original collectors and curators writing meaningful information. This can be difficult to read, or if readable difficult to interpret. Much of the Otago Museum's collections have poor documentation, a widespread problem in nineteenth century New Zealand. A newly re-discovered ledger (registration book) has brought details of the acquisition of some of the early collections to light.

Why is it important?

Adds to the understanding of how NZ colonial museum collections were formed and documented.

Perspectives

Piecing together the history of the collections and discovering who contributed to the Otago Museum's early days is my daily work nice to be able to share findings at conferences and in print.
