Why is it important?
Addiction is endemic in our society and needs spiritual as well as clinical care.
Perspectives
My personal perspective is that one of the best ways to help an addicted person is to encourage him or her to find personal aspirations for the future without the drug. The question that frequently needs asking is not 'What are you receovering from' ,but 'what are you recovering for? I have found this approach to be very effective in practice. It is a'spiritual' question that does not have to be linked to a particular religious fairh.
