What is it about?
Indexes are often created in files that are separate from the source document. In this paper a new term is suggested to describe this method of indexing. The method is differentiated from embedded indexing, and an overview of software programs and methods for separate-file indexing (SFI) is provided.

Why is it important?
Although most of the methods described are not new, it may be useful to look at them from a higher view point and find a common bracket, SFI. For example, in discussions with publishers this can help to weigh up pros and cons of the various methods and to jointly decide on the best method for an indexing project.
Perspectives
I hope this article provides a basis for discussions of indexing techniques. Even procedures that at first sight seem familiar can be used in new ways and thus contribute to more effective work.
