What is it about?

Urban Aboriginal youth, particularly women, are making significant contributions to urban Aboriginal communities. This study of a small sample of young women who are developing their own business interests explores the ways in which they have developed their work, the obstacles they have faced, and the contributions they hope to make.

Why is it important?

The urban Aboriginal population in Canada constitutes about 60% of the total Aboriginal population. Within the Aboriginal population, young people are a majority. The ways in which Aboriginal youth are developing their lives, their significant contributions to Aboriginal culture, and their challenges to colonialism are important signposts to new developments.

Perspectives

The experience of conducting fieldwork amongst young Aboriginal people in Canada has led me to meet young people with impressive strengths, whose resilience and resourcefulness are considerable.
