Why is it important?

This is a pioneer study of women writers whose lives and works have been missed by critics and historians.

Perspectives

The book highlights important works and political leanings of three major authors, not widely discussed until Arkinstall, after a meticulous archival research, brings their works and their political and cultural endeavors to impact the rise of feminism in Spain. Authors, Amalia Domingo Soler, Ángeles López de Ayla and Belén Sárraga are discussed in terms of their writing for women periodicals edited by and directed to women. Their work focuses on the three authors advocating for women's education and civil rights. Arkinstall has provided materials and insight for scholars to continue a deeper understanding and human conditions of women adhered to freethinking (Freemasonry) and spiritualism (Spiritism).
