What is it about?
This paper will discuss the challenges and obstacles, but also the motivations and rewards speakers of the youth language “Camfranglais” are experiencing in everyday life. To gain an insight into the sociolinguistic situation of urban youths in Cameroon, both the attitudes of Camfranglais-speakers compared to those of their adult counterparts (teachers, parents etc.) vis-à-vis this variety, and the channels of its reproduction and distribution will be examined. With a special focus on the “carriers” of youth culture (such as rap-music and magazines), I will describe which role this variety plays in the development of a Cameroonian identity for adolescents and young adults in Cameroon.
