Why is it important?
First, social media studies have become a well-established discipline, and the present study corroborates this claim. Secondly, although hate speech and varying forms of bigotry were not inaugurated with the emergence of social media platforms in the mid-2000s, it becomes evident that this digital technology has afforded people to unleash such behaviours in ways, reach, and speed not seen before in many societies around the world.
Perspectives
The expectation is that this study will contribute, firstly, to the expansion of the discipline of critical social media and Internet sudies. Secondly, that it will inspire subsequent studies with diverse methodological approahces and, finally, that it will serve as a source of reference for other researchers.
