What is it about?
This article documents eight cases of autism induced in children and teenagers by experiencing traumatic events so horrific as to make life too painful to continue living. In each case, the brain instantly responded by permanently altering its neuropsychology so that the person never again experienced emotional pain.

Why is it important?
This article is important because of its discovery that not all cases of autism are genetic in origin, that some can be induced by psychological trauma.
Perspectives
It was a revelation to me that the autism of eight people (myself included) was not present at birth but induced by severe trauma.
