Why is it important?

Statistics, recognized both as an independent field of science and a methodological approach, has increasingly influenced not only societal and technological domains but also personal competencies. As the demand for usable, interpretable, and processable information continues to grow, the transformation of individual skills through statistical literacy becomes essential alongside the broader application of statistics itself. Therefore, it is crucial to promote the use of statistics in a way that expands the reach of its interpretive and evaluative capabilities to a wider audience for their benefit. Recognizing that individuals’ interactions with themselves, their environment, and other entities are often governed by probabilistic cause-and-effect relationships highlights the need to define the boundaries of statistical literacy, its concepts and its necessities. This study aims to establish or reinforce the conceptual framework and terminology of statistical literacy, while outlining its requirements in alignment with the discipline of statistics. In doing so, it seeks to organize the foundational knowledge needed in the statistical literacy literature and enhance academic productivity in this area. To attract not only statistical literacy researchers but also the attention of the general public, the book includes essential statistical concepts, practical examples, and key components of application.

Perspectives

Ivan Illich once said that modern life reshapes language, myths, and how we think. We believe the same transformation applies to data. In today’s world, numbers are everywhere, from your phone to the supermarket gate. But raw data, like raw wheat, has little value unless processed. Just as wheat becomes more valuable when turned into pasta or bread, data becomes meaningful only when we know how to understand and use it. That’s where statistical literacy comes in. In our view, statistical literacy is not just for scientists. It’s a must-have skill for everyone; students, workers, voters, consumers. Whether you're checking your exam score, comparing fuel prices, or interpreting election results, you’re using statistics. And yet, most people do so without training. This book aims to change that. It helps define what statistical literacy means and why it matters. It offers examples, terms, and tools that make statistics accessible. Not just for experts; but for everyone. Because in a world overflowing with charts, percentages, and big claims, knowing what to trust is power. And statistical literacy is how we turn numbers into knowledge and knowledge into action.
