What is it about?

The article discusses the phenomenon of “rhetorical question” and proposes the following definition of this notion: a rhetorical question is an indirect statement expressed in the form of an interrogative sentence. The meaning of this statement is that, according to the speaker’s conviction, something necessarily has or, conversely, cannot take place. This meaning has special means of expression in Russian. Such a definition makes it possible to distinguish the rhetorical questions among other types of indirect use of interrogative sentences and to specify it against the background of the interpretation of this term in everyday speech and in poetics.
