What is it about?

Purpose – This article seeks to describe and examine the role, structure, and prominent aspects of proclaimed firm culture within defense industry companies in Bulgaria, reflecting their leadership goals in today's business landscape, thereby justifying the existence of each organization. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative study was performed, relying on a review of academic literature related to professed organizational culture. Additionally, the websites of the targeted companies were thoroughly analyzed to highlight their practical approach to showcasing the distinct official culture of defense business entities.

Why is it important?

Findings – A detailed set of cultural characteristics identified at the second level of Edgar Schein’s organizational culture model is presented. The literature review outlines the connection between official expressions of corporate culture and the defense sector. Key details regarding the evolution of Bulgaria's defense, technological, and industrial sector are discussed, including the transition to a market economy and a democratic political system. A survey of official cultural attributes was conducted among members of Bulgaria's defense, technological, and industrial sector. The findings indicate that these companies tend to present their official cultures in a concise manner, often relying on the influential nature of key documents like mission and vision statements or a limited number of simpler foundational elements. Recommendations to senior managers in Bulgarian defense firms on effectively and strategically utilizing elements of official culture are provided. Research limitations/implications – Financial data for the companies surveyed is not available.

Perspectives

Originality/value – This provides an overview of the favored cultural characteristics among members of Bulgaria's defense, technology, and industrial sector, reflecting their strategic leadership goals. The second tier of Edgar Schein’s organizational culture model is populated with a collection of cultural attributes.
