What is it about?

The question of how to classify the members of the armies of Charlemagne and his descendants has been controversial - were they professional soldiers, or feudal levies? How did the raising of a Carolingian army work in practice? Who was called up? Christoph Haack analyses these questions and suggest interesting new approaches.

Why is it important?

There is often a hurdle for anglophone researchers to read publications written in different languages, so this review provides an insight into the latest research in German.

Perspectives

The whole subject of "feudalism" is still hotly debated, and the debates in the anglosphere talk about a completely different set of facts than the debates on the Continent. Haack's book is a fact-based contribution to the debate - it won't resolve it, but provide a more secure set of facts.
