What is it about?

Rechargeable batteries have important roles in our recent life. At the interface between electrolyte and electrode in rechargeable batteries, energy conversion reaction proceed. Due to the difficulty of the analysis, the reaction mechanism at interface are not fully clarified. In this work, the atomic-level nature of the interface between electrolyte and electrode are investigated.

Why is it important?

Atomic-lever nature at the interface between liquid and solid in energy conversion system is very complicated and difficult to analyze. To understand the atomic-level nature, the special instrument, frequency-modulated atomic force microscopy which can operate in liquid, are constructed. The special instrument clarified the true nature of the interface.

Perspectives

Atomic-level nature of the interface of dynamics of complicated systems will be clarified in future. For example, the reaction mechanism at the interface between electrolyte and electrode in fluoride shuttle batteries which contain extremely high energy density than current rechargeable batteries will be analyzed near future.
