What is it about?

This paper reports our experience in teaching qualitative methods to Psychology first year students. We highlight how the qualitative perspective helps students to better work as human rights agents, since qualitative methods concern the diversity of voices and experiences of those involved in the research process.

Why is it important?

Given the lack of hands-on literature to support lecturers on qualitative methods, this study provides an overview of teaching strategies, topics to be covered, and a human rights approach that places students as agents in the social context in which they act.

Perspectives

We hope that this paper enhances the strategies and tools developed by lecturers of qualitative methods to bachelor students. The context of a developing country that faces several human rights violations calls for lecturers able to demonstrate to their students the relevance of scientific methods to tackle this problem systematically. Moreover, by being in Portuguese, this paper targets scholars that have Portuguese as their first language, favouring the improvement of their teaching practices.
