What is it about?

Peritoneal equilibration test (PET) is the commonly utilized to assess function of peritoneal membrane (dialyzing membrane) in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). While PET data is not necessary to prescribe a PD prescription, it can provide valuable information and identify patients who are at risk to develop fluid overload and damage of the peritoneal membrane. Strategies can be implemented to improve fluid removal and improve overall PD outcomes. Many patients undergoing PD are diabetic. Because fluid used in PD contains high amount of glucose, some of this glucose can be absorbed and make diabetic control difficult. PET data can be used to estimate daily glucose load and help control diabetes better. Hence, whenever possible PET Testing should be performed in patients starting PD
