What is it about?

People with chronic kidney disease have cognitive impairment and are at an increased risk of dementia. Cognitive impairment occurs across multiple domains in people with kidney disease. There are also differences in cognitive function in males and females with kidney disease. Female participants scored higher with manual dexterity, processing speed and fluidity, language comprehension, and episodic memory, whereas males scored higher with attention and inhibitory control. Future studies are needed to determine why people with kidney disease have cognitive impairment and to identify new treatments for improving cognition in these patients.
