What is it about?

Reduced sodium intake is widely recommended among individuals with chronic kidney disease. However, no robust data is available to support the effects or potential benefits of this approach. In the current study, we utilize the rigorous, randomized design of the DASH-Sodium trial to determine the intermediate effects of reduced sodium intake on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on cystatin C. We present evidence that a reduced sodium intake and a healthy dietary pattern decrease eGFR over a 4-week period. These changes may result in slow kidney function decline in the long-term.
