What is it about?

Long term use of steroids as part of immunosuppressive regimens for kidney transplant recipients with low immunological risk does not have better outcomes as compared to those who undergo steroid withdrawals. Moreover, ongoing long term use of steroids contribute to worse overall health including cardiovascular and metabolic derangements that are detrimental to long term patient survival. Transplant providers should evaluate and justify ongoing use of steroids while attempting to withdraw or minimize corticosteroids when appropriate.
